Quarterbacks

Absolute Locks:

  • Baker Mayfield
  • Case Keenum

Possibly Practice Squad:

  • Kevin Davidson

Outside Looking In:

  • Garrett Gilbert

The Browns quarterback room is pretty set. They have Baker Mayfield as the returning starter, and I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Case Keenum is not starting. Baker Mayfield will not be benched at any point in this 2020 season. Case Keenum has around $10 million in guarantees, so he’s going to be on the roster for 2020. Cutting him would make absolutely no sense.

As Jake Burns pointed out on twitter, the Vikings only carried two quarterbacks into the beginning of the season. This means that Garrett Gilbert’s time as a Cleveland Browns quarterback is likely going to come to an end unless he puts on a show in training camp.

Kevin Davidson, the undrafted quarterback out of Princeton, is someone who has a good chance to make it as a backup quarterback in the future.

He could be seen as a project for Kevin Stefanski and will be 23 this season, compared to Garrett Gilbert, who will be 29. Especially with the expanded practice squad, the Browns are most likely going to have a quarterback on it. Davidson will be someone that has worked with Stefanski, so when it comes time to assemble the practice squad, he will likely be the choice.

There’s also the Ivy League connection between this new Browns regime and Davidson. They could respect his intelligence as a player and covet it for a practice squad player. Davidson is an interesting prospect who can sling it, and the Browns signed him for a reason. He could see a longer tenure with the franchise than many expect.

Mayfield and Keenum are the quarterback choices on the 53 man roster though, and that shouldn’t surprise anyone.
