Drew Forbes – Right Guard

The name I continue to be high on is Drew Forbes, the second-year lineman from Southeast Missouri. Forbes was a three-year starter at tackle for the Redhawks and was a second-team Associated Press FCS All-American his senior season.

Forbes was not going up against top competition week in and week out, but started every game for three straight years, and has shown the athleticism and power to be a guard in the NFL. Many forget that Forbes was challenging for a starting position at right guard in 2019 before suffering an injury. That’s impressive for a sixth-round pick even if the competition level wasn’t great last season. An unfortunate injury in the fourth preseason game last season never allowed Forbes to have a fighting chance in 2019, but with another year under his belt, it could be his time to shine.

The road to becoming a starting right guard could be even tougher in 2020 as Wyatt Teller, who started the last nine games for the Browns last season, remains on the roster. Also, last year’s starting right tackle, Chris Hubbard, is without a starting position currently. After restructuring his contract to become more team-friendly, Hubbard could be a potential fit at guard. It remains to be seen if offensive line coach Bill Callahan will want Hubbard to only focus on being the backup offensive tackle or try to compete for playing time at guard.

Forbes is young, mean, and motivated, which is usually a recipe for success in the NFL. With a great coach in Callahan, look for Forbes to win the job at right guard in 2020. Forbes will be a tremendous run blocker and will continue to improve his pass blocking skills. Having a talent like J.C. Tretter and Jack Conklin on each side will also make the transition easier for anyone. The additional time in the pocket for Mayfield will be all the difference in the world and lead to many more wins.
