The Cleveland Browns have a rich and illustrious history. With only 96 days until the Browns season opener, we look at the best Browns player to ever wear number 96.

The countdown to the 2020 NFL season is upon us. With 96 days remaining until the Browns season opener, we continue the countdown by celebrating the best Cleveland Browns player to ever wear number 96 — Reggie Camp.

Reggie Camp was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 1983 NFL Draft out of the University of California. Camp, who was listed at 6-foot-4 and 274-pounds, was a day one starter at left defensive end as a rookie. Camp’s size and motor made him a perfect candidate for Browns’ defensive coordinator Marty Schottenheimer’s scheme.

Camp’s rookie season was a winning one, as the Browns finished with a 9-7 record. The team finished in second place in the AFC Central. Camp was able to make a strong showing for himself as a rookie starting all 16 games and notching four and a half sacks.

However, it was Camp’s second season that would be one for the record books. Although the team did not see tremendous success in the 1984 season, Camp excelled. The second-year defensive end racked up a monstrous 14 sacks. That number is still the all-time single-season sack record for the Browns to this day.

Although many don’t expect that record to stand for too much longer (we are looking at you Myles Garrett), it was a phenomenal season for Camp and one that has not been outdone in over 35 years. Camp followed his stellar sophomore campaign by adding another eight and a half sacks in his third season for the Browns and an additional seven his fourth season.

Camp was an integral part of a resurgent Browns defense under (now) head coach Schottenheimer. By the time the smoke had cleared, and his time was over in Cleveland, Camp played five seasons for the Browns and finished with 35 sacks during his time there.

After Camp left Cleveland, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons and his career as a professional quarterback harasser came to an end.

Camp will always be remembered fondly in Cleveland for the excitement he provided the fans in the dawg pound during the mid-1980s. Camp is currently the head coach of the Bear Creek Bruins high school football team in Stockton, California.
