Grant Delpit – Safety:

The Browns came into 2020 with only one safety on the roster in Sheldrick Redwine. After signing Karl Joseph and Andrew Sendejo in free agency some thought the Browns may be set at the position. However, with defensive coordinator Joe Woods expected to utilize the 4-2-5 dime scheme, an additional safety was a crucial pickup in the 2020 draft.

Grant Delpit from LSU won the Jim Thorpe Award last season but was more deserving in the 2018 season. Delpit played through a difficult high ankle sprain for all of 2019 and only missed one game.

While Delpit was a good player last season, he was far less impactful than the 2018 season. Browns fans should be excited that his best game of the season last year was the National Championship Game, which he finally had a chance to rest before.

Delpit didn’t work out at the combine but did post a video running a 4.39, 40-yard dash at LSU’s pro-day. He possesses the size, speed, and coverage skills that any team in the NFL would desire. LSU utilized Delpit at both safety positions and he even can play in the slot. Delpit excels in zone coverage where he can read the quarterbacks eyes but has shown he can play tight bump and run coverage when needed as well.

Delpit must clean up his tackling to excel for the Browns next season, but with another offseason of getting stronger, look for that to come naturally. Delpit is an intelligent player who never looks out of place on the field and will put the effort in the classroom as well.

With the injury in the past, look for Delpit and Joseph to be on the field almost every single snap in 2020 with Delpit moving all over the field when needed. Don’t be shocked if this young man makes the pro-bowl as a rookie, if he would have gone to the draft last year, he likely would have been a top-15 pick.
