Most disappointing Cleveland Browns quarterbacks: 5. Charlie Frye (2005-2007)
Charlie Frye wasn’t a high draft pick out of Akron but that doesn’t mean fans in Cleveland didn’t get fired up about his potential. As a rookie, the former third-round pick got his first start in Week 13 of the 2005 season and set the team’s rookie record for a passer rating in a single game with 136.7. In that contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he threw for 226 yards with two touchdowns to Braylon Edwards.
Frye was then named the starter for the 2006 season, but things got ugly fast. He ended up starting in 13 games but Frye had a real problem with turnovers. He completed 64.1 percent of his passes but had 17 picks while throwing only 10 touchdowns. Cleveland was just 4-9 in his starts that season.
Even so, he was given another chance to start in 2007 as he battled Derek Anderson and rookie first-round pick Brady Quinn for the job. He ended up winning the competition but would start just one game. After going 4-of-10 for 34 yards with an interception, Frey was benched for Anderson who led the Browns to a 10-6 record — which also happened to be the last time the Browns had a winning season.
Following that season, Cleveland traded Frye to the Seattle Seahawks. He spent one year there before playing 2009 in Oakland, which happened to be his final NFL season.
