Predicting Cleveland Browns 2020 Depth Chart: Secondary
By Randy Gurzi
Reserves
There’s one reserve who could challenge Kevin Johnson for the third role, but outside of that, there’s a lot of unknowns for Cleveland.
Terrance Mitchell
A former seventh-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys back in 2014, Terrance Mitchell has always been under-appreciated. He’s a physical corner who gets under his opponent’s skin and frustrates them all game long.
He’s entering his third season with the Browns and has 59 tackles and two picks so far since joining them in 2017. He might not start but don’t be surprised to see him on the field a lot — and he could even be a candidate to play in the hybrid safety role at times as well.
A.J. Green
A product of Oklahoma State, A.J. Green was surprisingly undrafted this season. Cleveland took advantage of that and offered him a hefty signing bonus, which lured him away from several other interested teams. He’s likely to make this roster and could be a contributor for them with starting upside a few years from now.
Fighting for a Spot
Tavierre Thomas
Originally signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2018, Tavierre Thomas has been with the Browns since Sept. of his rookie season. He’s played in 29 games and if they go six deep at corner, he’s likely making it ahead of the rest of the group.
Donnie Lewis, Jr.
A seventh-round pick in 2019, Donnie Lewis spent his rookie season on the practice squad. He seems likely to play there again in 2020, unless he wows the team in training camp.
Robert Jackson
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 207-pounds, Robert Jackson was with the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans in 2018 before landing with the Browns practice squad. He started there again in 2019 but ended up making the active roster and played in six games. He recorded just two tackles but the fact that he was on the game-day roster speaks volumes to the progress he made since joining the team.
Donovan Olumba
Donovan Olumba has appeared in one career game, which was last season for Dallas. He has incredible size at 6-foot-2 and 205-pounds but has a long road ahead of him to make this team.
Jameson Houston
Considered a lockdown cornerback at Baylor, Jameson Houston is another undrafted free agent trying to make the team. The practice squad is most likely where he’s headed in 2020 but he has some intangibles to like.
