5. A.J. Green will cost Terrance Mitchell a spot

The Browns were active this offseason when it came to adding undrafted players and they found themselves a good player because of it. Oklahoma State cornerback A.J. Green had a lot of suitors which led to Cleveland having to get into a bit of a bidding war for his services.

Interest from other teams resulted in him getting the highest reported guarantee of the offseason — $145,000. As Dawg Pound Daily’s Dan Justik points out, that might not seem like a crazy number for normal NFL contracts but it’s significant for an undrafted player and it could mean he has a real shot of making the 53-man roster.

"“In order to sign Green, the Browns had to give out the highest reported guarantee to an undrafted player, giving Green a $145,000 guarantee. It was evident several teams were after Green following the draft, so the Browns knew they were going to have to be aggressive.” “Although the guarantee is a minimal amount in the grand scheme of NFL economics, the Browns would not have signed an undrafted player to that type of deal unless they had high belief in his talents. That is why it seems like Green will have a realistic shot to make the Browns final 53-man roster.” — Justik, DPD"

That could end up being bad news for Terrance Mitchell, who is a solid cornerback but was clearly brought in as a favorite of John Dorsey’s. The outgoing general manager singed Mitchell back when he was with the Kansas City Chiefs and then did so again in 2018 with Cleveland.

Now entering the final season of his contract in Cleveland, Mitchell could lose his job as he’s behind Denzel Ward, Greedy Williams, and Kevin Johnson. He could be too well-paid for the No. 4 job meaning as long as Green shows he can get the job done, he could cost the veteran his spot on the roster.
