Greedy Williams talks Cleveland Browns defense with Jim Rome
The Cleveland Browns got some bad news on Tuesday when Mack Wilson was carted off the field with a knee injury. Even with the second-year linebacker out though, their defense is expected to be much better in 2020 than they were the season prior.
A huge reason for that expectation is the arrival of Joe Woods, the new defensive coordinator who was the defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers a season ago. In addition to his time with the 49ers, Woods won a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos following the 2015 season.
Woods has experience as a coordinator but his biggest success has come as a defensive backs coach and he has two talented corners to work with in Cleveland as he looks to help them take the next step. One of those corners, Greedy Williams, was recently on The Jim Rome Show and he spoke very highly of Woods, saying he’s hyped to work with the Browns new assistant coach.
Williams said he “loves” the scheme that Woods brings saying simply it gives him and the rest of the defenders an “opportunity to make plays” which is all he wants.
From there, Williams touched on the fact that there are big expectations for him and Denzel Ward, the Browns’ fourth overall pick in 2018. Ward was solid as a rookie, but like Williams, struggled through a hamstring injury in 2019 and was never at 100 percent.
He said the two have nothing but good stuff to say about one another and that they are taking things one play at a time — realizing if they do their jobs, everything will work out as it is supposed to.
