Dallas cap issues are real and affect all players

The Cowboys should win the NFC East every year because they have the best scouting and players are willing to come to Dallas at a discount. The reason they don’t win every year is that they put themselves in salary cap hell every year by trying to hold onto star players. The suspicion is that Jerry Jones the fan in some ways is actually a very kind-hearted, sentimental person and gives larger contracts than Jerry Jones the general manager should.

Most of the business decisions are being made by Stephen Jones, who is probably a greater judge of true value than his old man.

In 2021, the Cowboys have $172 million worth of contracts already on the books. That’s not too bad, except it does not include any money for draft choices, free agents or quarterback Dak Prescott. If they have to franchise tag Dak again, the estimated cost will be $37.7 million dollars, meaning that they have restructure several contracts and probably cut a few veterans in order to fit under the salary cap. It won’t be easy, and there may be some bloodshed in Arlington.

There will be a ripple effect throughout the organization, as the Cowboys will be forced to save money by cutting players with non-guaranteed contracts. They will be keeping a sharp eye out for undrafted rookie free agents.

2021 might actually be a good year for an undrafted rookie to make the club, but a four year veteran looking for a one or two year deal will probably get a much better deal from the Browns and would have a better chance of staying on the roster.
