Cleveland Browns: 3 disappointments after first quarter of 2020 season
By Clay Goodwin
1. Greedy Williams, cornerback
Greedy Williams is on this list for one reason – he has not taken a snap for the Browns this season. The best ability for a player is availability and Greedy Williams has simply not had a great start to his NFL career with availability. Williams missed four games in a row last season and has already missed the first four of the 2020 season.
The Browns felt very confident they found a steal in the second round by selecting Williams, who was previously mocked to be a first-round pick. Williams surely had some bright spots in year one but was not overly spectacular. Cleveland was hoping he would be back stronger and ready to solidify the corner spot opposite Denzel Ward. It is very frustrating seeing Williams on the injury report week after week without ever really getting a timeline for his injuries.
In his absence, Terrance Mitchell has been excellent in coverage. He has been a luxury to have as a backup corner for Cleveland. To be fair, there is simply no guarantee Williams has a sure spot when he returns, anyway. He is going to have to outplay Mitchell.
Surely, getting a talented player like Greedy Williams back will be a positive and will help the defense. The Browns defense definitely needs all the talent and health it can get, and hopefully, Williams adds that. He can help in the slot and take reps from Tavierre Thomas and M.J. Stewart potentially, but will certainly have to earn his outside job back from Mitchel.
The Browns team and fans are excited to get Williams back as soon as possible so they can see what kind of talent he can bring to the defensive backfield. But as of now, he has just been a disappointment.
