6 Free agent safeties Cleveland Browns should consider
1. Reshad Jones is probably not available
Veteran safety Reshad Jones is sometimes mentioned as a potential candidate for an in-season signing, but the former Miami Dolphin and two-time Pro Bowler played only four games in 2019 due to injuries.
Most importantly, Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post reports that Jones needed neck surgery as of July in order to play and that surgery had been delayed due to Covid.
This writer was not able to confirm whether that has taken place, but even if his neck has been operated on, the recuperation period is not known. It might not be simple and it might not be quick.
The 32-year old Jones was a tremendous player and played his entire career with the Dolphins. So, sure, put in a call to the agent and find out his status. But it sounds very, very unlikely that he will play in the NFL this year, if ever.
However, if there were any chance that he could get back on the field, it would be hard to find a player who could improve the defense as quickly as Jones can. He has 776 career tackles, three forced fumbles, and an astonishing 21 picks.
Cleveland has some young safeties on their team but the injuries could have them desperate enough to finally look for a veteran free agent.
