Dud No. 1: Baker Mayfield, Quarterback

The weather was bad once again in Cleveland, and no one is looking forward to warm weather in Jacksonville next week more than quarterback Baker Mayfield. While the weather was a concern, Mayfield must get better. The weather in Cleveland will never consistently be good in November, so if he is going to be the long-term guy, there must be an improvement.

The biggest stand out of the day was the two missed touchdown passes in the first quarter. The defense forces a goal-line turnover and Mayfield then took the Browns 94 and a half yards. Unfortunately, that was a half-yard short of what they needed for seven points as Kareem Hunt was stopped short of the goal line on fourth and goal. What’s even more unfortunate was the two missed passes to wide-open tight ends on prior plays that nearly any quarterback in the league could make.

Mayfield then started the second half on another horrible note. The Browns defense which has struggled every week finally got a three and out to start the second half. Two plays later Mayfield fumbles the football on the 19-yard line and then the Eagles score on the next play to tie the game.

While Mayfield got the wins for the Browns, a 12-of-22 for 204 yards yard performance isn’t what you expect from the number one overall pick. If the Browns want to be real competitors in the AFC, they must know if Mayfield is the guy. Let’s hope Stefanski takes the training wheels off before the end of the season so we can find out.
