5 Studs and Duds for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday
By Greg Newland
Stud No. 1: Defensive Ends
The biggest worry coming into this week was what life would be like without Myles Garrett rushing the passer. Garrett came into the week leading the league in sacks with 9.5 but was forced to sit out with a positive COVID-19 test. While the Browns had problems on Sunday, the defensive pass rush was not one of those items.
Olivier Vernon ended the game with three sacks and a safety, while Adrian Clayborn added another sack and a half. Not to mention a quarterback pressure by Denzel Ward let to an interception returned for a touchdown by Sione Takitaki. The Eagles offensive line has been decimated by injuries all season, and Sunday was no different with all-pro center Jason Kelce playing through the game with what appeared to be a painful elbow injury.
Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz has been the most sacked quarterback all year, and that certainly makes you second guess everything. With a short clock in his head, the Browns appeared to have him rattled for a majority of the game and the unit certainly did their part in the Browns getting a huge win. Maybe just one time this season the offense and defense will play well on the same day, that would be a sight to see.
The biggest disappointment of this performance is the question of why can’t they do this when Garrett plays? If Vernon, Clayborn, and Porter Gustin can play at this level once Garrett returns to the field, this could be a very dangerous group rushing the passer.
