Baker Mayfield: 4 defining games of the 2020 season
1. Wild Card Game at Pittsburgh
In his NFL playoff debut, Baker Mayfield stepped up to the challenge of going to Heinz Field and taking on the Steelers by going out and getting the victory.
Mayfield entered Heinz Field as the underdog as his head coach, Kevin Stefanski, left guard Joel Bitonio, and countless other players and coaches had to sit out due to COVID-19 protocols.
The Steelers boasted one of the most ferocious pass rushes in the league this season, yet Mayfield overcame all of that.
Before he even took the field, Mayfield had a 7-0 lead after the opening snap went over Ben Roethlisberger’s head and went into the end zone where safety Karl Joseph pounced on it.
After a Roethlisberger interception, Mayfield took advantage by connecting with Landry four a 40-yard touchdown.
The Cleveland quarterback finished his first playoff game 21-34, for 263 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. With a somewhat depleted offensive line, Mayfield was not sacked or even hit in the game. Pittsburgh saw its 73-game streak with at least one sack vanish.
Mayfield, when facing the blitz, went 14-20, for 10 yards, and two touchdowns. He was able to get the ball out quickly, making T.J. Watt, who could end up being the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, an essential non-factor.
Mayfield led the way and snapped a 17-year drought in Pittsburgh and led the Browns to a playoff victory for the first time in 26 years.
