Cleveland Browns: 6 Studs and Duds from heartbreaking Divisional Round loss
By Sam Penix
Stud: David Njoku
All season long, some have been clamoring for David Njoku to be featured more in the offense. He finally played a key role, catching four passes for 59 yards on the day, including a 27-yard screen on the Browns’ second play from scrimmage. Njoku made some difficult catches in crucial situations and showed why he deserves to be a larger part of the offense.
That’s to say nothing of his excellent blocking, which has been on display for the entire year. He had earned a reputation through his first three campaigns as a poor blocker but flipped that on its head in 2020. He’s the team’s best blocking tight end, whether it’s in the run or pass game, and is far and away its most dynamic receiving threat in that room.
Njoku will be entering the final year of his rookie contract next season, and although he did request a trade a few months ago, it would be surprising if the team did not want him back. Perhaps he’ll be targeted more than 29 times in 2021.
The Browns offense is clearly better when he’s on the field. He’s a great blocker, too big for defensive backs, and too fast for linebackers. He’s finally starting to become the player he was drafted to be. Now, he needs to be given a much bigger role. He’s more than earned it.
