Remember Handshake Gate? Fun times.

Now that the dust has settled on that snafu (and Baker Mayfield definitely shook his hand) the Browns could sign one of the best cornerbacks of this generation, Richard Sherman.

Certainly in the back half of his career, Sherman’s age and lack of scheme diversity could scare off potential suitors, allowing the Browns to nab him on a budget. He still plays the position at a high level and his former position coach, Joe Woods, is now the defensive coordinator for the Browns.

It’s impossible to ignore that the Achille’s heel of the Browns was the secondary. Even with the return of Greedy Williams and Grant Delpit, adding veteran insurance like Sherman could shore up a position of need while tutoring the youngsters in the room on their new scheme.

At this stage of his career, Sherman is the type of veteran to beat the opposition with his intelligence and tape study. He would add immediate, reliable depth to a position that has been ailed by injuries in recent years. Joining a contending team like the Browns would give Sherman a chance to compete at the highest level for a few more seasons on discounted deals until he decides to hang up the cleats.
