1. Carlos Basham, Defensive End, Wake Forest

Perhaps the most sought-after position in the NFL (after quarterback) is defensive end, with an emphasis on personnel who can rush the passer. Because of that, the price tag in free agency for elite pass rushers is absurd. Additionally, you will often see teams reach early in the draft for these young guys just hoping they can develop.

There’s no doubt the Cleveland Browns will be in the market for a pass rusher in the 2021 offseason. While I do see Andrew Berry trying to address this position in free agency, there’s a scenario where I could see the Browns reaching for an edge rusher in the first round of the draft.

As mentioned above, the market for free agents is typically wild for premier pass rushers. With the Browns finally building talent and having to be more cautious on spending, there is a legitimate possibility they head into the draft without addressing the position. If that is the case, there is a real chance Berry could look to draft a defensive end early.

What is the issue with that? This year’s draft has a real lack of talent at the position. In fact, it’s safe to say the top four or five guys on most boards have a strong “boom or bust” type of rating.

With teams reaching left and right for rushers, there is a chance that Carlos Basham of Wake Forest is the best available at the position when the Browns are on the clock. Berry could feel so much pressure that the best available is such a low-quality prospect already, that he must address the position immediately.

Basham has shown to have a strong motor but could lack the athleticism to warrant a first-round grade. Basham has the football IQ, power and leverage, but has shown to struggle against offensive lineman who can match his strength in the past. Unfortunately, this isn’t the ACC anymore Mr. Basham, and almost every tackle in the NFL will have your strength.

If Andrew Berry can’t address defensive end in free agency this year, it’s important not to panic early in the draft. It’s important to not reach and draft the best available player for the team with pick No. 26, not the best available position.
