Cleveland Browns: 5 best remaining pass-rushers in free agency
By Sam Penix
2. Melvin Ingram
Knee injuries landed Melvin Ingram on injured reserve two separate times in 2020, and in the seven games he appeared in, he registered zero sacks. This might seem to indicate that he began to slow down at the age of 31, but sacks aren’t a good measure of how effective a rusher is. Ingram still generated pressure at a solid rate, and would be a quality starter for the Browns next season.
He would provide a similar body type to Olivier Vernon, and while he’s not the run defender that Vernon is, he is a better pass-rusher. He’ll turn 32 in April, and his recent injuries will have an impact on his market, but as long as he’s healthy, he’d make a big impact. He has plenty of experience on the left side, which is a necessity, as Garrett is much more effective when lined up on the right.
Ingram has always been a stand-up end, which may not be ideal, but the Browns shouldn’t pigeonhole themselves into looking for only one type of player. Ingram can play, and it shouldn’t matter whether he’s standing up or playing with a hand in the dirt. He can certainly help this team.
