Round 2, Pick 54; Payton Turner, EDGE, Houston

TRADE: CLE receives: 2.54

IND receives: 2.59, 6.211, 7.259

Neither Jadeveon Clowney nor Takk McKinley is the long-term Robin to Myles Garrett’s Batman. The EDGE depth chart may look good this season, but no one is under contract for 2022 aside from Garrett.

The rival Baltimore Ravens also happen to have a need at EDGE, and select one spot ahead of the Browns in the second round. Thus, in order to secure their top target and to make sure that the Ravens are left empty-handed, Cleveland sends its final two picks to the Indianapolis Colts to move up five spots. The Browns won’t be drafting nine players this year, and while it’d be nice to turn some of those into 2022 capital, it’s more important to make sure that Payton Turner is a Brown in this scenario.

Turner is an athletic marvel who gives relentless effort. He provides outside-in versatility which will help him make his way onto the field as a rookie, and his long-term potential is tantalizing. In five games in 2020, Turner collected 5.0 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss.

He’s already a disruptive player who is just scratching the surface of what he can be. It would be great to pair him with Garrett, and even better to make sure the Browns offensive line doesn’t have to deal with him in Baltimore.
