2. Ifeatu Melifonwu, CB, Syracuse

Former Browns general manager John Dorsey is a senior advisor for the Detroit Lions, who took Ifeatu Melifonwu 101st overall. He’s an excellent athlete with the ability to succeed in man or zone, and prior to the draft, was a player that many thought Cleveland could consider taking at No. 26. That evaluation proved to be much too rich, but Melifonwu could very well be one of the draft’s biggest steals.

The Browns top three cornerbacks are set, but a team can never have too many good ones, especially when all three of Cleveland’s have injury histories. The hope is that both Williams and Newsome will have better fortunes moving forward, but histories for both are less than encouraging.

Melifonwu would have also provided excellent size on the outside, something the team lacks. Had he fallen just a few more picks, the Browns would have been in a good position to move up from No. 110 for him.

His size and athletic ability also give him the ability to play safety, and that versatility would have been highly valued by defensive coordinator Joe Woods. Instead, he’ll likely pair with Jeff Okudah to form a formidable cornerback duo up north.
