4 Cleveland Browns who needed OTAs to improve
By Greg Newland
4. Grant Delpit, Safety
The Cleveland Browns took LSU safety, Grant Delpit, in the second round of the 2020 draft. With a limited offseason, training camp was the first real look he got as a rookie, and an unfortunate Achilles injury would keep him sidelined before seeing any game action.
The loss of Delpit derailed the entire Joe Woods scheme last year, as the Browns were poised to make a push to the 4-2-5 scheme, with Delpit being the third safety who roamed around the field.
Delpit has both the size and athleticism to be extremely versatile at this level, but he still needs to adjust to the speed of the NFL. Not to mention, he will be running all over the field so every single preseason rep will be beneficial to help him learn the playbook.
While Anthony Walker (middle linebacker) will likely be calling the plays in the huddle, Delpit will likely be the most important defensive player on the field for the Browns in 2021. If he can stay healthy and be the disruptor that so many believe, this unit could be elite.
With a history of injuries, the Browns want to be careful of how much action gets before the start of the season, but every rep he can get will only benefit him down the road. I get that he played in the SEC and won a national title, but the game is different at the NFL level, especially in the rover-type position he is about to take on.
