The first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft for the Browns was already mentioned as they took Jedrick Wills from Alabama at No. 10. In the second, they landed another potential starter as Grant Delpit slid down the board.

At one point, he appeared to be a lock for the first round but Delpit might have hurt his own stock by playing through pain in 2019. After a phenomenal season the year prior, he spent much of his final year with the Tigers dealing with a high ankle sprain. He looked like himself in their championship win but that was likely due to all the time off he had to heal up before that game.

Once in Cleveland, the expectations were high but sadly, we never got to see him on the field. Very early in training camp, Delpit suffered a torn Achilles which ended his rookie season before it even began. Cleveland did fine since they replaced him with Ronnie Harrison who they got from Jacksonville for practically nothing. But that doesn’t mean they can’t use Delpit this season too.

It’s still early in the offseason but the positive news regarding Delpit is that he was able to get on the field and there’s hope that he will be ready to go when the regular season kicks off. It should be expected that the coaching staff will ease him back into the rotation but there still seems to be nowhere near as much excitement about his return as there should be.

When playing at his best, Delpit is a difference-maker in the secondary. Adding him to the mix with Harrison and John Johnson III gives Cleveland three capable starters and will help tremendously in slowing down opposing passing attacks.
