Another player who has familiarity with a member of the Browns staff is Derek Barnett, a former first-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. Barnett wasn’t selected by current Cleveland GM Andrew Berry but they were together for the 2019 season when Berry was the vice president of football operations in Philly.

That also happened to be the best season of Barnett’s young career. The Tennessee product recorded 30 tackles and 6.5 sacks, which was a personal best for him. While that’s a respectable number, the truth is, Barnett has not yet lived up to the expectations he came into the NFL with.

Selected 14th overall, there were some who thought Barnett was on the same level as Myles Garrett — who went first overall in that same draft. At this point, that feels laughable since Garrett has become one of the best pass-rushers in the game and Barnett is still trying to get it all figured out.

He has done enough to get the Eagles to use their fifth-year option on him but it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see him hit the open market in 2022. And if he does, he could be a solid replacement for Jadeveon Clowney, should he elect not to re-sign after his one-year deal is up.
