No. 2 – Battle at cornerback

Another interesting spot on the roster this year will be the second cornerback position.  It seems obvious that Denzel Ward will be the No. 1 corner. John Johnson, Ronnie Harrison, and Grant Delpit will be the three safeties with Troy Hill as the nickel back.

That leaves Greedy Williams and rookie Greg Newsome to fight over the second corner position. Because of that, look for them both to get a lot of snaps, and be on the field together in a lot of different scenarios.

Competition only helps improve players in my opinion. Newsome coming into camp and challenging Williams for the position gives both the opportunity to make great strides as players. If it wasn’t for the past injuries, I would say Williams would be a lock to start the season, but we just don’t know if his shoulder is healthy.

Look for Joe Woods to also play a lot more man-to-man coverage while both are on the field in the second and third quarters. There won’t be exotic blitzes, but he will definitely want to see which of these two corners is the best fit to start for the team in 2021.

Both players have had some injury concerns, so seeing a big snap count in the preseason will also give the training staff a better idea of their bodies are going to hold up during an NFL season.
