3 Cleveland Browns losing leverage on roster spots
By Greg Newland
1. Sione Takitaki – Linebacker
Coming into camp it appeared that there were two spots to be filled by Sione Takitaki, Mack Wilson, and/or Malcolm Smith. The early belief was the Cleveland Browns would release the former fifth-round pick (Wilson), to retain their former third-round pick (Takitaki) and keep Smith around for a veteran presence who has Super Bowl experience.
With only a few days of pads under their belts, Wilson has really stood out at camp. He looks healthy for the first time in 12-months and he has added a ton of muscle while trimming down at the same time.
Takitaki hasn’t necessarily disappointed thus far, but you also know what you are getting. A guy who is okay in the running game but lacks the athleticism to be great in coverage or the outside run. I say that but will give credit where due. He was forced to start last year with so many injuries, and he was one of the most improved players on the roster from week one to week sixteen.
The big question now is, can he beat out Smith, and how many linebackers will the Browns keep?
Anthony Walker, Jacob Phillips, and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah are locked for the final roster, and I also expect Tony Fields to at least be given a one-year shot as he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 draft.
Takitaki spent two solid years with the Browns and played a big role on the 2020 team. However, the defense has been improved enough that his services will likely no longer be needed.
