3. Is James Hudson going to be ready for the swing tackle role?

There’s no denying the Cleveland Browns have one of the best offensive lines in the game with five solid starters. They even have some pretty impressive depth with players such as Drew Forbes and Nick Harris having bright futures as interior players.

However, they do have one concern — whether or not James Hudson will be ready to take on the role of swing tackle by Week 1 of the regular season. Cleveland lost Kendall Lamm in the offseason, which went under the radar but shouldn’t have.

Lamm was a solid player and with Chris Hubbard not back from the injury that ended his 2020 campaign, that means Hudson is their best option behind Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin. And in his first outing, Hudson looked like a mid-round rookie.

He had his share of wins as he started at left tackle then moved to the right, especially against the run. But his pass protections needed work and while his ceiling is high, putting the swing responsibility on him from day one could be a lot to ask.

Cleveland’s line was elite last season but they did have to turn to their reserves several times. They never lost any starters for an extended amount of time but they still need someone who can play/start in a pinch and they will use these next two games to see if Hudson will be that guy.
