Top 3 Cleveland Browns offensive storylines against the Kansas City Chiefs
By John Suchan
Can Mayfield produce and guide the Cleveland Browns to victory this week?
Baker Mayfield had a good game last January when the Browns lost to the Chiefs in the playoff game. He finished going 23-of-37 including one touchdown. He managed the team well and they almost pulled off the victory. A late-game series stalled and the Browns couldn’t get the ball back after kicking it away but the loss was not on him.
I think it’s very important that the Browns don’t fall too far behind in this game, if they do at all. An early lead would be significant. Mayfield seems poised and ready to have a historic season. His numbers have been good for his first three seasons.
He’s cut back on the interceptions. He even had a game last season against the Cincinnati Bengals where he completed 22 passes in a row. So the idea that Mayfield can’t lead this team to the promised land is a serious mistake by those that want to continue their barrage of silly takes on Mayfield.
Mayfield is ready to silence those critics and it starts with this game in Kansas City.
I don’t believe he needs to launch the ball 37 times like in the playoff game. If he can stay in that 25-35 range on the day, the Browns opportunities to victory grow because they’ve used their running game more.
We will talk about that issue in a moment, but I expect the numbers will be more balanced than back in January.
I’ll be surprised if Mayfield doesn’t have a great game Sunday. He has done well in games where there were doubters, and there were many of those a year ago and Mayfield continued to produce, and the Browns got to the playoffs and an 11-5 season record. My money is on Mayfield.
