Cleveland Browns Blueprint No. 1: Contain Justin Fields

I’ll be honest, I know Justin Fields would eventually take over as the starting quarterback, but I was really hoping when the Browns played them in week three it would still be Andy Dalton.

I’m not saying that the Bears team hated Dalton, but I’m willing to bet anything there will be a little extra pep in all of the Bears steps as they take the field with their new rookie quarterback, who looked tremendous throughout the preseason.

The biggest factor that Fields brings is the ability to use his legs and extend a play, and the ability to just take off and run. This puts pressure on the defensive backs to cover longer, and the lineman/linebackers to contain Fields in the pocket.

For his first NFL start ever, the Browns need to put a huge emphasis on keeping him in the pocket. Even if that means they can’t get as much pressure, making Fields beat you with his arm seems to be the route to go.

This could be a huge week for Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, and Grant Delpit. These are the two utility guys on the team that are asked to do a little bit of everything. Using these guys as the spy or contain man on Fields could be extremely beneficial. The good news, Fields doesn’t have the juke moves or speed of Lamar Jackson, but he can still make you pay.

Jadaveon Clowney and Myles Garrett will need to get pressure, but they will need to maintain gap discipline while doing so. It will also be important for the interior of the defensive line to collapse the pocket so Fields has nowhere to go.
