Can the Cleveland Browns offensive line protect their leader?

Baker Mayfield has been sacked 12 times this season. That’s a lot. The early season proponents of the team thought the Browns offensive line was the best of the best in the league but that’s not the case. Injuries to players like Jedrick Wills have hindered the offensive line being a stable protector of their quarterback.

Last season the Browns line only allowed Mayfield to be sacked 26 times all season. Six of those sacks happened in the Browns last regular-season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That means they only allowed 18 sacks in 15 games. It was the ninth game of the season, not the fourth game that the Browns offensive line gave up their quarterback’s 12th sack a year ago.

The Chargers were relentless in their win against the Raiders Monday night. The Raiders quarterback Derek Carr was sacked four times and finished with a 57 QBR.  It seemed Carr was rushed much of the game. He even fumbled the ball in the backfield.

What was once the security blanket of Mayfield has become an issue and that’s concerning since we are only four games into the season.

Considering how horrible Mayfield played a week ago, I’m expecting the offensive lineman to rise to the occasion, but those sunny skies of southern California can play tricks on you.
