Cleveland Browns player to extend No. 1: Baker Mayfield

There are two players who were drafted in Round 1 of the 2018 NFL Draft by Cleveland and both had their fifth-year deals picked up this offseason.

Denzel Ward is one of those players and while the Ohio State product is coming off his best game of the season, he has been struggling with health once again which is why it would make sense to ask him to play out the final year of his deal before hammering out a contract.

The other player is none other than quarterback Baker Mayfield. He too has had his share of concerning moments but it feels as though a lot of that was tied to a certain player who is no longer here. With that in the rearview, Mayfield showed us again in Week 9 why fans have been so enamored with him.

He was distributing the ball to all the right players and led them to a huge win over the Cinncinattie Bengals. Perhaps they don’t jump right into contract negotiations but as long as he can go out in Week 10 against New England and continue to show that he’s the player we saw in 2018 and after Week 7 in 2020, the two sides should start to ramp up talks.

Cleveland made a huge commitment to No. 6 right after the trade deadline and now they should start to see what it would take to commit beyond 2022.
