Cleveland Browns QB option No. 2 – Marcus Mariota

A guy you haven’t heard from in a while but had success early in his career is Marcus Mariota. Originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2015 with the No. 2 overall pick, Mariota was 8-7, 9-6, and 7-6 in consecutive seasons with Tennessee.

His stats were never off the charts, but he three for 3,426 yards in 2016 to go along with 28 total touchdowns, 349 rushing yards, and only nine interceptions. Mariota is considered a dual-threat quarterback, but he never seemed like a guy who was afraid to sling the ball.

Is Mariota a better option than Mayfield? Likely not now. Does he have some potential and could he be worth the risk of a one or two-year contract? Absolutely. Remember, Mariota has been behind Derek Carr the last two seasons who is a top-10 quarterback in the league.

The Kevin Stefanski offense is extremely quarterback-friendly and is even more effective with an athletic quarterback. I’m not saying that Mayfield isn’t a good athlete, but Mariota is the next level and is considered a threat by all defenses on the ground.

As mentioned before, I’m not saying to bring Mariota into Cleveland to take Mayfield’s job, but bringing him in as the backup may be just the motivation he needs.
