Worst Cleveland Browns contract No. 3: J.C. Tretter

Before I get started, I want to be clear, I don’t think J.C. Tretter is a bad player at all, but because they have Nick Harris on the roster it makes his contract a bad deal.

The Cleveland Browns are paying Tretter north of $11 million in 2021 and will owe him just under $10 million in the final year of his contract in 2022.  He has been the ultimate warrior only missing one game in his 3-year tenure with the Browns, but I can’t say he is a top-four center in the NFL which is where he ranks in pay.

Again, Tretter has been great, but he legit doesn’t practice during the season because of his knees.  I know he’s a veteran and doesn’t need a ton of practice time, but you can’t tell me that doesn’t have any effect on the rest of the offensive line.

Tretter has no dead cap next season, and Harris remains on his rookie deal through the 2023 season. While Harris hasn’t gotten a ton of opportunities, he has made the best of when he has started. Last weekend he looked great at center when Tretter missed because of COVID19.

The Wyatt Teller and Joel Bitonio deals earlier this season were a telling tale the Tretter was going to be the odd man out and Harris was next in line. The Cleveland Browns could certainly use the cap space in other positions as well.
