Cleveland Browns resolution No. 2: Get Baker Mayfield a QB guru

This season has not been one to remember for quarterback Baker Mayfield. His stats have all taken a dip and while a lot of that could be due to a myriad of injuries, Mayfield has also seemed to struggle with his technique.

Again, not all of this is on him either. The offensive line has been dealing with one injury after another which could be contributing to his lack of comfort in the pocket. However, he’s the one who will have to figure out what to do in order to adapt and not allow factors out of his control to change his effectiveness.

One way to do this would be to work with a quarterback guru. In the past, Mayfield has elected not to do this — saying back in 2019 that he didn’t need someone to teach him how to do a “three-step drop.”

"“I do not need somebody to teach me how to do a three-step drop,” Mayfield said back in 2019 via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “I can look at film and be critical of myself. Throughout this process, I have had people help me out along the way and try and take things from different people. Any time I am around somebody, I ask questions. Do not act like I have it all figured out. There is always room to improve and take things from there and there, but I would not say that I will go on the beach and swim through the ocean and try and learn how to play quarterback by doing that.”"

There’s no indication that Mayfield has changed his mind on this but it’s something he should consider. While it’s true he doesn’t need someone to teach him the basics of the position, there’s no shame in getting a good quarterback tutor to help assess areas that can be cleaned up.

Some of the best in the business have done this and Mayfield could benefit from switching up his routine just a bit this offseason.
