Cleveland Browns Trade No. 2: Austin Hooper to the Carolina Panthers

The last two years in Cleveland for tight end Austin Hooper have been very disappointing. He came to the Browns in 2020 from the Atlanta Falcons in free agency. While playing for the Falcons he had a career-best 75 receptions and 787 yards and six touchdowns scored in 2019.

Expectations were high when he arrived in town. With other tight ends David Njoku and Harrison Bryant on the squad as well, getting the chance to make the most of your opportunity is crucial. Hooper’s numbers were way down the last two seasons. Combined he only totaled 780 yards with seven touchdowns. He was targeted 131 times and only caught 84 passes.

David Njoku is a free agent and could go elsewhere this offseason, but if the Browns were smart, they’d try signing him to a new deal and part with Hooper in a trade or release.

With that in mind, maybe a change of scenery would help reenergize Hooper’s career. The Browns would save $9.5 in cap space, and they could go out and get an additional tight end through the draft.

The trade proposition with the Carolina Panthers would breakdown like this:

Cleveland trades:

Austin Hooper
6th Round Pick in 2022 Draft

Carolina trades:

Morgan Fox
6th Round Pick in 2022 Draft

The Browns will need help on the defensive line next season, especially on the interior. Fox had a nice career with the Los Angeles Rams and this past year played with the Panthers.

He signed an $8 million, two-year deal with them. The Panthers would save $4 million in cap space if they traded him. He’s a free agent again in 2023.
