Free Agent Cleveland Browns won’t land No. 3 – Marcus Mariota, Quarterback

I know that Marcus Mariota isn’t the most popular free agent of the 2022 class, but he is a household name that has four years of starting experience in the NFL.

There is undoubtedly a lot of question marks surrounding Baker Mayfield and his path forward with the team, but Mariota just doesn’t make any sense to me.

For one, he’s still going to be expensive, I don’t see you getting him for less than $4 million a year. Why pay that when you can just keep Case Keenum for $8 million and he knows your offense like the back of your hand.

Mariota is an athletic guy, but his skill set doesn’t necessarily fit this offense perfectly.  If the Browns want to bring in a quarterback this offseason, it needs to be a guy that can compete with Mayfield and take this team to the next level. Not a guy who is 29-32 in his career with not one season with 3,500 passing yards or more.

I hate to be a Debbie downer, but fans should not get their expectations too high that Andrew Berry is going to orchestrate anything to bring in a starting quarterback to compete or replace Mayfield. Those types of deals are extremely risky and require far too many assets.

Mayfield was bad in 2021, and no one was more frustrated with the situation than me, but he deserves at least one more chance.
