Cleveland Browns RB in crosshairs of Nick Chubb: Kevin Mack

As a young fan of the team back in the 1980s, I had the chance to watch Kevin Mack play on Sundays and he was simply a bulldozer.

He loved contact. His shoulder pads were huge. He liked to get muddy on the old Municipal Stadium field. He and his running back partner Ernest Byner reestablished a proud Browns running game. They both had gone over a 1000 yards gained in 1985.

Overall, Mack gained 5,123 yards in his career with Cleveland. The fact that he tallied those numbers in 99 games just shows how good Chubb is doing already. Chubb will pass Mack in probably three or four games coming season. Chubb’s gained his yards in only 58 games. That means that Chubb will have passed Mack in the rankings in probably 35 or fewer games — as if we didn’t already know he’s a stud.

Another stark difference between these two players is that Chubb has a career 83 yards a game average while Mack had 52 yards a game average.  And if you want to talk about a player taking care of the ball, look no further than these two.

While Mack fumbled the ball 30 times, so far Chubb has only turned the ball over six times. My running back hero Mack will always be one of my favorites but just looking at the comparison between these two runners is starkly different.
