Cleveland Browns Potential Bust to Avoid No. 1: David Bell, Wide Receiver, Purdue

Perhaps no one lost more draft stock at the NFL combine than former Purdue wide receiver, David Bell. Not only did he run a 4.65 40-yard dash, his lateral drills, and route running both lacked during his combine performance.

After receiving All-American, Big Ten Receiver of the Year, and a Biletnikoff Award finalist after 2021, the wave of Bell has come to a screeching halt. A guy that had 93 receptions for 1,286 yards and six touchdowns is projected by some to fall as late as day three.

Even if Bell falls to round five or six and the Cleveland Browns are on the clock, I think it would be best that the pass. If we know anything in Cleveland, it’s that unathletic wide receivers really struggle in the NFL.

At 6-foot-2, he does have some size and one thing you can’t question is his hands, but I’m afraid at the next level he will be so blanketed in coverage that quarterbacks won’t even have a chance to get him the ball.

There are some guys who are amazing college football players, and there are some that are great in college and the NFL. I’m afraid at this point I’m convinced that Bell is the former.

Unfortunately, he lacks the speed to even play special teams, so making an NFL roster will be even more difficult for him.
