Baker Mayfield: 3 teams that would be stupid not to trade for Browns QB
By Greg Newland
Team that should trade for Baker Mayfield No. 3: Carolina Panthers
After making a splash last year and acquiring Sam Darnold, the Panthers quickly realized that the Jets didn’t break him as many believed. Darnold has proven to be a decent starter in the league, but we have also seen enough to know he can’t win you a Super Bowl.
With over $30 million in cap space and no elite quarterback available in the 2022 NFL draft, why not take a shot on Mayfield. At this point, a late-round pick in 2022 or even 2023 would likely get it done.
I’m not saying this makes the Panthers an instant contender, but most would agree that Mayfield is a huge upgrade from Darnold. Remember, Mayfield is coming off a serious injury and surgery. There’s a chance that he could light things up next season, and a change of scenery would help.
If the Panthers traded for Mayfield, they would have two fifth-year options of first-round quarterbacks from the 2018 draft. That means over $36 million of guaranteed money at the position. That’s not uncommon anymore in the NFL but typically is only to one guy that you don’t have a ton of questions on.
I think the Panthers make a ton of sense, but we also can’t forget about Robby Anderson’s comments on Instagram when these rumors started. If Mayfield is already disliked in the locker room, it could be a very tough transition for him.
