Reason Mayfield could ruin season No. 1 – No starting quarterback

The biggest issue of this whole situation, the Cleveland Browns likely won’t have a starting-caliber quarterback for most of the season. No offense to Jacoby Brissett, but no one can argue that is several notches below a talent like Watson. This team goes from 11-6 or 12-5 to 7-10 really quick with Brissett as the starter.

I obviously don’t know how the whole situation went down, but none of us are surprised how it ended. If you have watched Mayfield’s press conferences for even a week you know he is a guy that can’t take this kind of trade.

To be the guy, the savior in Cleveland, and to see an organization willing to give up all those future picks for your replacement? Very few professional athletes would handle that well, but we knew Mayfield would be on the far end of the spectrum as far as a reaction.

So now you could be in a situation where your former quarterback is so upset, that he’ll sit out a year, your current quarterback is suspended for a year, and your backup quarterback is a slightly above-average backup in the NFL.

This seems like a huge waste of prime years for Nick Chubb, Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, and several others on this team. Guys like Joel Bitonio don’t have a ton of years left in this league, so to completely waste a season because you don’t have a quarterback seems irresponsible.

Fans will never know the due diligence the Browns did on Watson, and we will never know what came out after the extension. But I do have a big fear that this huge trade could be a complete flop in 2022.

Luckily, Browns fans are used to preparing for the next year.
