Bold prediction No. 3: Josh Rosen wins backup role

Everyone in the world is expecting Jacoby Brissett to be the backup quarterback this season. He could likely start the season in Week 1 if Deshaun Watson is suspended for any length of time. This is the most likely outcome but what happens if Brissett goes down with an injury at some point?

Or what if Josh Rosen, who was just brought in this week for a team tryout and then signed a one-year contract throws caution to the wind, blows everyone away in training camp, and earns the backup spot?

Nothing is guaranteed and everything has to be earned. Rosen was a highly touted player back in 2018 when he was drafted in the first round and played for the Arizona Cardinals coming out of UCLA. That rookie season ended up being rough for Rosen, who at the time was considered a better quarterback than former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield who was drafted No. 1 by some scouts. He was then traded to Miami and has been with the Bucs, 49ers, and Falcons since then.

Cleveland also brought in Joshua Dobbs to be another potential backup. The fact that they signed Rosen doesn’t necessarily mean that Brissett and Dobbs haven’t impressed enough to this point, but it certainly is noteworthy and worth paying attention to as training camp commences this week.
