Roquan Smith finds himself in an unenviable situation. He’s an extremely talented player stuck on a franchise that’s rebuilding — and has been rebuilding for what feels like an eternity.

The Chicago Bears just moved on from Matt Nagy and they’re trying to get Justin Fields on the right track now that Matt Eberflus is their new head coach. However, they didn’t retain Allen Robinson on offense and traded Khalil Mack, their biggest defensive star.

Now, they might lose Smith as well, as he’s frustrated with the lack of movement on a contract negotiation with the Bears.

"“They’ve refused to negotiate in good faith,” Smith wrote according to ESPN. “Every step of this journey has been ‘take it or leave it.’ The deal sent to me is one that would be bad for myself, and for the entire LB market if I signed it.”"

Smith has since requested a trade and there should be plenty of suitors. One team that should throw their hat into the ring is Cleveland, who could use another playmaker next to Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

A four-year veteran, Smith has 524 tackles — including 163 in 2021 — 17 pass defenses, 14 sacks, and five interceptions. His addition would help Cleveland keep the opposing team’s scores manageable for a ball-control offense that they would have to run with Brissett.

Of course, he might end up being a one-year rental since he would demand a huge contract but he would be a highly motivated player that could help them get where they want to go in 2022.
