5 Cleveland Browns with the most to lose in Preseason Week 2
Player No. 1: Anthony Schwartz
There’s getting off to a rough start, then there’s how Anthony Schwartz performed in the Browns first preseason game. If you watched the game, and even if you did not but were just on social media, it was a brutal sophomore debut. Schwartz looked like a deer in headlights and dropped two passes from Deshaun Watson in the process.
The second-year speedster got the starting nod due to the Browns sitting Amari Cooper out and Watson looked for him early and often. One must wonder if a performance like that is enough to cause the Browns quarterbacks, be it Watson or Brissett, to look in a different direction. But it was just one preseason game, and Schwartz could connect on a few plays and leave that performance in his rearview.
It is easy to lose sight of the fact that Schwartz was drafted as a speed project and was always going to need time to develop. Luckily for Schwartz, he possesses one of the most sought-after commodities that cannot be taught: speed. But the NFL is a bottom-line business and if you are out on the field you must produce.
If the Browns are putting him in the position of being on the field, the rest is, for better or for worse, going to be in Schwartz’ hands. Given how inconsistent his hands of been thus far, that is a risky proposition.
