Offensive Player No. 2: Jerome Ford

The Browns arguably boast not only the best running back duo in the NFL, but also the best running back room from top to bottom. Even though Jerome Ford is the player being highlighted, this selection could have just as easily gone to D’Ernest Johnson or John Kelly.

But just as he did in week one of the preseason, Ford once again displayed the abilities that forced the Browns to select the running back in the draft despite already being stocked at the position. Although he didn’t rip off any chunk runs as he did in the preseason opener, Ford showed a little bit of everything against the Eagles. He displayed patience in the stretch game to take what was available and displayed power running between the tackles.

The rookie’s most impressive play of the day came on a screen play late in the first half. Ford slipped out of the backfield, caught the ball, let his blockers set up, and then weaved his way up the middle of the field for an 18-yard gain. Ford displayed his hands, patience, and field vision all in one play.

While Ford is going to be back in the Browns running back pecking order, he is quickly showing the coaching staff that he has what it takes to be a feature back in the NFL. Don’t be surprised if his ascension causes the Browns to shake up the running back room to get the rookie some touches as the season progresses.
