4 Browns offensive players who shined against Philadelphia
Offensive Player No. 1: Joshua Dobbs
The Browns quarterback position has been embroiled in controversy and uncertainty all offseason. However, one component of their quarterback room has clarified itself, Joshua Dobbs is more than a big brain and camp body. Dobbs’ ability to execute the offense has to give this coaching staff a boost of confidence.
Dobbs’ understanding of the offense and decisiveness was on full display against the Eagles. Outside of one miscommunication on their second drive of the day, Dobbs knew where the ball needed to go and delivered it accurately and on schedule. Dobbs was at his best throwing ball off of bootlegs, where his athleticism and fluidity lent themselves to throwing on the run.
But where Dobbs was at his most impressive was when things were off schedule. On the Browns first offensive drive of the game, Dobbs stepped up in the pocket to avoid a cornerback blitz, spun out the backside, despite having his undershirt torn from his body, and escaped down the sideline for a 36-yard gain. Then on the very next play, Dobbs bobbled a low snap and promptly ran the ball into the endzone for a three-yard quarterback keeper.
Dobbs finished the day with 14 completions on 20 attempts for 141 yards, and 47 yards and a rushing touchdown in just over one-half of work. All four of Dobbs’ drives on the afternoon culminated in points, including a clutch two-minute drill to set up a chip shot field goal for Cade York.
Dobbs is running the offense and making it look easy. He is displaying the poise, efficiency, and confidence that this coaching staff needs to see from their backup quarterback. After all, football is not rocket science, but if it was Dobbs would be just fine.
