Browns: 3 defensive players that shined in Week 3
Defensive standout No. 1: Alex Wright
The Alex Wright experiment is ahead of schedule. Way ahead of schedule.
When the Brown selected Wright with the 78th overall pick of this year’s draft, it was done with the thought that Wright could develop into becoming a starting caliber defensive end to pair with Myles Garrett.
While that is a lofty goal, Wright is that kind of special athlete that could attain such heights. At 6-foot-6 and 270 pounds with exceptional athleticism, Wright is the prototypical edge defender that this coaching staff covets.
With the re-signing of Jadeveon Clowney, Wright was put on the developmental path as to not put too much on the rookie’s plate. Well, Wright is ready to eat sooner than anticipated. His jump from the first preseason game, where he looked tentative, to the second game was immensely impressive. However, what he put on tape against the Bears shows that he is ready to run with the ones.
Granted, the Bears starting offensive line is one of the weaker units in the league, but Wright was blowing up plays from the starting whistle. Wright had a hand in stifling every play in the Bears first offensive series t in a that resulted in a quick three-and-out.
Halfway through the Bears next offensive possession, the Browns decided that they had seen enough from Wright and pulled him from the action. The rookie looks primed and ready for his role, as the primary edge to come in off the bench in relief of Garrett and Clowney. If Alex Wright was a stock, the time to buy was yesterday, because he is only going up from here.
