No. 2 – Grant Delpit

Grant Delpit had a great play on an erred Baker Mayfield throw that led the Browns offense to points on Sunday, which was huge, but he also had multiple coverage breakdowns that led to big plays. I’m not saying each huge pass plays to Robbie Anderson and Ian Thomas was completely his fault, but he was certainly involved in both plays.

The communication just must be better. Delpit must communicate with the corners in zone coverage to make sure he passes off receivers, and he can’t get sucked into the underneath routes to try and make a big play leaving a huge hole in the deep zone.

Joe Woods also needs to get Delpit more involved closer to the line of scrimmage. Because Mayfield played so poorly at the beginning of the game, there was no need to bring a ton of blitzes as the line was getting plenty of pressure.

With the offensive line being a question mark for the Jets, and a quarterback in Flacco who isn’t mobile, getting pressure early with a safety blitz could be huge. I don’t look for this to be a trend with Delpit, but there is no doubt he had to work off a bit of the rust on Sunday.

Delpit needs to continue to play fast and not overthink, but also not give up the big play. If he communicates better in week two, he could quickly go from a guy that needs to play better, to a guy that led the team to a victory.
