3 problems with Kevin Stefanski as the head coach of the Browns
By John Suchan
Problem No. 1: Team is losing
The biggest factor in all of this for Stefanski is that the Browns continue to lose. It’s not as if losing for a Browns franchise is anything new. The fact that Stefanski had a good rookie campaign as a coach and the team got to the playoffs has probably made what’s happening now more difficult to understand.
Some will continue to argue that the team just isn’t very talented and that we should continue to just excuse Stefanski‘s coaching abilities.
Stefanski’s long coaching career had mostly been as an assistant when he was with the Minnesota Vikings for 14 seasons. Maybe he just got a little lucky that rookie season with the Browns because other teams weren’t familiar with his coaching tendencies.
But now the NFL has caught up to him and his predictable patterns. He hasn’t done anything out of the ordinary since that first year and teams are well prepared to match up and win the battles on the football field. It’s a game of chess to some degree in the NFL and Stefanski continues to lose that game too.
There are several talented players on the roster including two all-pro running backs Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb and a star defensive end in Myles Garrett. They also have an all-pro wide receiver in Amari Cooper. Taking advantage of those players’ skill sets should be a priority for the coach. I am sure he’s trying to involve these players more each week but yet things aren’t changing for the team.
Coaches want to see their teams improve as seasons progress and certainly Stefanski is no different in that objective but these problems he’s having with the Browns currently aren’t going away. Will they ever? His team is not improving. While some keep saying to just wait and things will get better when their quarterback returns, it might just all be too late for Stefanski.
