Browns should restructure Myles Garrett contract or look to trade him

Can Myles Garrett help with the budget?

The raw data come from Over The Cap; however, the Minimum Mandatory Expenditure is shown in the last column. This reflects that even if there is a small amount of money guaranteed, the roster spot must still be filled by a player earning at least the NFL minimum salary. The team would then have to pay the amount that they owed the previous player plus $750 K to fill the roster spot as a minimum.

So, for example, Corey Bojorquez is guaranteed only $250,000. However, if the Browns cut him, the Browns must then replace him with a minimum-salary player, so the Minimum Mandatory Expenditure is thus $250,000 plus $750,00 — and there’s no way to reduce the expense further for that roster spot.

The Browns are about $20 million in the hole and could recover $20 million in 2023 cap charges by restructuring Garrett. Trading some big contracts would also help a lot and allow them to sign some free agents.

2024 is also a mess, by the way. Let’s just say that if the quarterback is making $55 million a year, and other players have cap charges that increase every year, the budget cannot actually recover until he is gone. In the meantime, a few expensive players may have to be traded, so don’t get too attached to them.

It’s possible that Watson’s camp might be willing to convert salary to bonus money without demanding an extra year, just out of the kindness of the hearts, and that could help significantly without the need to rock the boat with Garrett. However, if the Browns have the intention of someday trading Watson, it may be even harder to do.
