DE Marcus Benard Out for Season; Joe Haden, Alex Mack Statuses Uncertain

Cleveland Browns defensive end Marcus Benard, suffering a broken hand after crashing his motorcycle on I-71 on Monday, has been placed on the reserve/non-football injury list and will miss the remainder of the season. Auston English has been signed off the practice squad to take Benard’s place on the roster.

No disciplinary action has been taken on Benard just yet, but head coach Pat Shurmur let it be known that he has ways of disciplining his players. At this point, though, like most people, Shumur was just relieved to know that Benard is okay.

In other Browns injury news, the playing statuses of cornerback Joe Haden (knee) and Alex Mack (appendectomy) are still uncertain. Neither has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders, but both players have sat out the last two practices.

If Haden cannot play on Sunday, Dimitri Patterson will replace him and Buster Skrine will be the third corner. Steve Vallos is Mack’s back-up should the Pro Bowl center not be able to play.
