Report: Browns Players Expect Brian Hoyer to Start

Training Camp for the Cleveland Browns officially starts tomorrow yet news has already come out regarding the quarterback competition. We know that Mike Pettine has done everything but anoint Brian Hoyer as the starter for Week 1 but now comes the report that Browns players expect Hoyer to start:

We have already seen Jason Pinkston, who is competing for a starting guard spot himself, weigh in on the matter on Twitter:

So today’s report by Holtzman comes as little surprise. Veterans tend to like rookies to “pay their dues” and “know their place.” Whether Hoyer keeps the support through Training Camp and a very difficult opening schedule will be another discussion.

For Johnny Manziel his biggest challenge starts with the playbook. From there he will focus on the physical attributes of backpedaling from center, something he did little of in college, then making the right reads and getting the ball out of his hand quickly. He is likely to make some spectacular plays during the pre-season that will get both fans and teammates excited.

Hoyer’s steady leadership as well as his experience in the NFL should put him over the top. A report this morning on ESPN Radio stated that Hoyer only was away from Cleveland and the Browns facilities for 5 days this off-season. The rest of the time he was working on rehabbing his knee, getting to know the playbook and throwing to some of the receivers and backs that were also in town.

Manziel, as we all know, wasn’t doing these things. The Browns expect him to be fully committed now that Training Camp has started and expect him to be ready to go when the season starts. Likely he will be ready to go if something happens to Hoyer. Will teammates still have patience if the Browns struggle to start the season with Hoyer? Will the fans start calling for Johnny Football? (What is a good chant in the stadium if this happens?)

So far all signs point to Hoyer, how do you feel about that?
